Pick Brains
It seems quite grotesque when a co-worker says in a loud voice "Hey Sam, come over here. I want to pick your brains". No they are not cannibals and not only do they mean well, they are also asking for a favor.
When someone says that they want to "pick your brains", they are actually asking if you can help them understand something or that they want to get some detailed information off you.
The definition of pick brains is:
"To ask for information or advice from someone who knows more about a subject than you do. I'd love to pick your brains about computers - you seem to be the expert around here."
An simpler definition is:
"To get information and advice from someone. The new kids can pick the brains of guys who have played against these teams before."
The "Pick-Their-Brains" Business Technique
The act of picking an experts brains for information and help in your business area is quite a widely used tool. Although they will not give out proprietary information, most business people will give out general information in a business area.
If you are starting a new business, it would be wise to contact all the people that you think could help you know more:
- Tricks of the trade
- Contacts
- General information
- Well known business practices
- Insider information
- Opinions
- Other points of view
If you are ever thinking of starting up your own retail store and know nothing about how to do it, just ask the old man running the second hand book store, or any other friendly store owner that has had the experience.
